Frequently Asked Questions
Realms
Learn about the core feature of Moonbeam - community hubs called Realms.
What is a Realm?
A Realm is a community hub. It's where you chat, stream, and post about the Realm topic with others! Moonbeam is made up of Realms, it's the only place to interact outside of stream chats. Realms can be about anything—from cosy games to actual play, finances to crafting.
Realm Tags
Realm tags help Moonbeamers identify the content within a Realm. Currently, tags cover the genre (e.g. indie games, TTRPGs, cosy games, coworking). When searching for Realms to join, you can filter by tags to find Realms with the things you enjoy.
You can assign up to 5 tags to your Realm by going into the settings while in your Realm and selecting from the options available in the "Overview" tab. Our tags are constantly evolving (just like Pyxis!) so you can signpost your Realm as best you can.
Creating Chat Rooms
To create a chat room, open your Realm and click the three dots next to a chat room section. Select "Create a room" and enter the chat room's name. You can make chat rooms private, meaning only specific roles can view them. This allows places for moderators, streamers, subscribers, or other roles in your Realm to chat privately within the Realm.
Chat Room Creation Permissions
Not everyone can create a chat room! You must have a role with permissions that allow you to create a chat room. Realm Owners automatically have this permission.
Creating Sections
To create sections for chat rooms (when you want to create role or content-based spaces) look at the bottom left of the screen (next to your profile picture) for a button that says "+ Create Section". Click it and title your new section. You must create a section first before creating channels to go within that section.
Realm Posts
A Realm post is a piece of content shared by a member in a specific Realm containing text, links, or a YouTube video embed. All members of your Realm can like and comment on posts. Posts are viewable to all members no matter which chat room they are in.
Pro Tip!
Put two asterisks (**) before and after text you want to make bold or two underscores (__) before and after text you want to make italic!
Realm Roles
Realm roles give members of your Realm different permissions, from creating streams and posts to accessing moderation tools. Realm Owners (which is its own role!) have permissions enabled to do anything and everything in their Realm.
All Realms come with three default roles:
- Members can send messages in public chat rooms
- Streamers can create streams in your Realm
- Moderators can access the moderation queue, assign roles, and take moderation actions
